A mum-to-be cried after sharing her unusual first name with a colleague – who told her it was a “stupid name to give someone”.

The colleague in question went to Reddit Am I the A**hole subredditto ask if their honest reaction to the baby’s name was out of pocket or completely acceptable.

“So my colleague is pregnant with her first baby and she asked me yesterday what I thought of his name and things didn’t go well,” admitted the 23-year-old.

“We work in a hotel where there isn’t a lot of traffic, so there’s always plenty of downtime to sit and chat.

She added that they were “not friends,” but because they were both women of the same age, they talked a lot during the same shift and were talking when she brought up the subject of the baby’s name.

“She asked me if I had heard of the name Venus and I said yes and she said she was going to name her daughter that but add an A at the end so it would be Venusa,” declared the woman.

“She said it was so exotic and unique, didn’t she?” she continued.

‘I said no, that sounds like the already existing name “Vanessa.”‘

The mother-to-be was upset by this and said that her boyfriend and parents loved the unusual nickname and had never heard it before.

But the Reddit poster disagreed, telling her it was a “stupid” and confusing name.

“I said it sounds like Vanessa and it’s a bit of a stupid name to give someone since every time they say it out loud people call her Vanessa, and that will always be wrong spelled,” she replied.

“She started crying and said, ‘Great people are already insulting my parenting choices’ and that I’m ab***h and left early.

“Now our other colleagues have sent me messages saying that I am disgusting for making a pregnant woman cry.

‘AITA? I was honest since she asked me.

Some Reddit users pointed out that its “unique” name sounded like a disease.

Reddit users were divided over whether the woman did the right thing by sharing her honest thoughts on the baby’s name with her colleague, with many agreeing that it wasn’t a good name – but she could have told him in a gentler way.

“I once knew someone named Venus. THIS name isn’t too bad. But Venusa… NOPE. What OP said about Vanessa is correct,” one person wrote.

“While I agree with the soft YTA (you’re an asshole), I really think people need to stop asking questions they don’t want answered,” another added.

‘I’m with you (when you said it looks like Vanessa), but then you said: “and that’s a bit of a stupid name to give someone,’ and that’s where you dove into YTA,’ someone else pointed out.

Others joked that it looks “like a disease.”

“I really need to get my Venusa looked at by a doctor,” one joked.

“Venusa nervous. I hope it’s not contagious,” one Reddit user wrote.
