The wife of Essendon captain Zach Merrett has hit back at cruel trolls mocking AFL WAGs walking the red carpet at the Brownlow Medal ceremony.
Alexandra Merrett, who is pregnant with her first child, took to TikTok to explain the process behind creating a look for football night.
In a video recorded in her car, the WAG gave her followers an insider’s view of the event.
“For those who don’t know, I think five or six players are invited every year,” he said.
“Unless you’re captain or have previously won a Brownlow, you don’t find out you’re going until the home and away season is over,” the WAG clarified.
Alexandra, who is launching a luggage brand later this year, went on to call out those who criticise women walking the Brownlow red carpet.
“That’s why I find it so interesting that people are so cruel about how everyone looks on the night, because some of these women have two weeks to put together a whole outfit.”
Elsewhere in the video, the mother-to-be explained that she put off designing her custom dress for the September ceremony due to her growing baby bump.

The stunning brunette has been collaborating with stylist Maggie Smith and designer Sonia Cappellazzo to develop several styles to suit her bump.
“Normally I would be a little bit more organized than this, but obviously with my growing belly we wanted to give it a little bit more time, just to wait and see what my body was going to do,” she said.
The video comes just two weeks after Zach and Alexandra announced they were pregnant with their first child.
In a joint Instagram post, the husband and wife shared several black-and-white images with Alexandra showing off her baby bump.
In a video recorded in her car, the WAG explained that players’ partners only have a limited time to put together their looks due to the Brownlow invitation policy.
Zach was wearing a black T-shirt and white pants, while his wife was wearing jeans and a blouse that showed off her growing belly.
In another photo, the WAG posed in a sheer lace dress that revealed her changing figure.
The couple were all smiles as they made the announcement, writing in the caption: ‘Baby Merrett, we’ve been waiting for you.’
