£6.25 a cup? Prada’s new cafe is fashionably expensive – even a jam on toast costs a purse £8 a serving

  • Business is booming at the new London coffee shop of high-end fashion label Prada
  • Luxury pop-up in Harrods department store charges £6.50 for a cappuccino

It’s one of the most expensive cafes in the UK, where even jam on toast costs a purse £8 a portion.

But despite the cost-of-living crisis, the business is thriving in a new London coffee shop set up by high-end fashion label Prada – with customers facing weeks-long waiting lists for prime slots.

The chic pop-up in Harrods department store charges £6.25 for a cup of tea, £6.50 for a cappuccino and £6.95 for a bottle of sparkling mineral water.

One of the most popular items on the menu is the individual glazed sponge cakes, decorated with a ‘Prada Milano’ logo and available in lemon, apricot, hazelnut, strawberry and pistachio.

The mini treats – or ‘mono portions’ as the café calls them – cost £15 and can be devoured in a few bites. But as one tweeter noted: ‘I swear Londoners are obsessed with being pranked. Prada opens (is) a cafe in London with £15 pies, while in Milan you get three gins and some crisps for the same price.’

Despite the eye-watering prices, Caffe Prada has proven to be a hit with fashionistas and Instagram influencers who love to post content from the photogenic venue, decked out in the Italian fashion brand’s signature mint green color scheme.

The MoS tried to reserve a table for a prime lunch slot yesterday – but the next available date was May 31. The lunchtime menu offers a £38 risotto with saffron and parmesan, spaghetti with tomatoes for £29 and tenderloin for £45. Adding grilled broccoli or a green salad as a side costs an extra £8.50. For breakfast, yoghurt and muesli cost £13, toasted brioche and jam £8, and salmon and eggs £17 – and you can add caviar for a further £22.

Social media users condemned the awards. One said the cafe was a “luxury rip-off”; another asked ‘do you have to re-mortgage to eat there?’ and another suggested it ‘won’t be as good as a Greggs’ – where a regular tea costs £1. The cafe, which will remain open until January next year, says it offers a “modern take on Italian tradition,” adding that its “fine patisserie creations skillfully combine artisanal techniques with the pursuit of new flavors and aromas with exquisite results.”
