Powerball has soared to a monstrous $80 million jackpot after no one won the first division for the fifth time in a row.

The prize is the largest jackpot on offer in the country this year, with one in four Australian adults expected to participate in next Thursday’s lotto.

The winning numbers in Thursday night’s Powerball draw 1332 were 21, 17, 16, 3, 22, 34 and 9, while the all-important Powerball number was 9.

In the hour leading up to the colossal prize draw, approximately 500 tickets per minute were expected to be sold.

While no player took home the $60 million this week, $33.4 million in prizes were won by Australians in divisions two through nine.

This included four second division winners who each scored $231,561.65.

An $80 million jackpot has been won twice this year, in April and August, and both times the huge windfall was taken home.

“In April of this year, two NSW players split the $80 million prize and left with $40 million each,” said The Lott’s Ally Ramsamy.

The winning numbers in Thursday night's Powerball draw 1332 were 21, 17, 16, 3, 22, 34 and 9, while the all-important Powerball number was 9.

And then, in August, a father from North Melbourne won $80 million when he was the only winning first division entry in that drawing.

“He became Victoria’s biggest lottery winner and the third biggest lottery winner in the country.”

If only one person has the winning ticket for next week’s monster prize, they will share the title with North Melbourne’s father as Australia’s third biggest lottery winner.

The Lott’s Matt Hart said the spring season was a winning season for many Powerball players, unlike other times of the year.

Over the past five years, spring has seen 25 Powerball Division 1 winners, with the second highest season being winter, which saw 23 people hit the jackpot.

Spring 2021 was no exception as we have already had three Powerball Division 1 winners scoring over $90.4 million. Who knows, we may be able to top this number this week,” he said.

“The fact that we’ve seen the Powerball jackpot rise to high levels over the past September, October and November helps cement the reputation of Spring.

“For example, in September 2019, Australia’s largest lottery jackpot of $150 million took place.”

In the year to June 30, 17 Powerball Division 1 winners across Australia won more than $519.8 million in prize money.

Of the Powerball division’s 17 winning entries, 10 have landed in NSW, five in Queensland and two in Victoria.
