The death of a young woman on a busy highway on Easter Monday continues to baffle detectives investigating whether she jumped from a moving vehicle.

Courtney Paige Anderson, 28, died on the Bruce Highway at around 5.15pm at Bajool, near Rockhampton, Queensland, after being found 80 meters from the Toyota Hilux she was traveling in with her 35-year-old boyfriend.

“We have not yet had anyone contact us who saw the vehicle being driven on Monday afternoon,” said Acting Detective Sergeant Kevin Mawdsley of Rockhampton Police.

“All of our sightings are post-incident (when) the car is stopped on the side of the road.”

Detective Mawdsley said there had been “some incidents reported previously but nothing recent”.

“I won’t give any more details about this, we want to talk to family members and other loved ones.”

Other cars on the road stopped and people desperately tried to save her, with one man later writing on Facebook that he “tried so hard to keep her alive – I’m devastated.”

Detective Mawdsley remained tight-lipped over speculation that Ms Anderson had jumped from the ute.

“She suffered catastrophic injuries and lost her life, but I will not comment at this time on how those injuries occurred,” he said.

Detective Mawdsley said Anderson’s partner was taken to Rockhampton Hospital, where he was treated for shock.

“Several witnesses who were traveling along the road and who stopped to provide assistance gave consistent accounts that he was very distressed and very emotional and that he needed to be treated for symptoms of shock.”

He added that investigators from Rockhampton Criminal Investigation Division spoke to the boyfriend on Monday night at the hospital and that he was cooperating.

“His version of events is something we are investigating,” Detective Mawdsley said, adding that officers would speak to him again, but that might not be until next week.

He He said the scene was “certainly very confronting and disturbing for those people” who saw Ms. Anderson.

A woman from Rockhampton was the first person to call triple-0 and she, a driver of another car and several others stopped to provide first aid.

“Those community members performed first aid and CPR for several minutes with the assistance of QAS (Queensland Ambulance Service) call handlers,” he said.

“When QAS arrived, there was a plan to airlift Courtney to Rockhampton Hospital, but unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Detective Mawdsley said Anderson’s family had given permission for his name to be revealed and that “as you can imagine, in an event like this, which was unexpected and sudden, they were extremely distraught and devastated.”

“When a death occurs in that category, it’s obviously devastating for the family… there will be a lot of questions that we probably won’t be able to fully answer.”

The detective said there was “no indication” that speed was a factor in the tragedy.

After Ms Anderson’s father Don posted a photo of her on Facebook, dozens of people left messages of condolence and sympathy for the grieving family.
