Pope will undergo bowel surgery today, Vatican reveals
Pope Francis will undergo surgery on his lower abdomen at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, the Vatican said in a statement.
It added that his medical team had decided in recent days that surgery was needed and the 86-year-old pope was expected to remain in hospital for a few days to recover.
The procedure comes two years after Francis had 13 centimeters of his colon removed due to inflammation and narrowing of the colon.
Francis was hospitalized in March 2023 with a bout of pneumonia, rekindling speculation about the possibility of the Pope resigning soon.
