Polish mayor in serious condition after stabbing at charity event
The mayor of a Polish city is in a very serious condition after being stabbed on stage during a charity event.
Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz was attacked with a sharp object during the collection event organized by the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the main charity organization of Poland.
Minister of the Interior Joachim Brudzinski said that Mr Adamowicz was in hospital in a very serious condition. He called the stabbing "an act of inexplicable barbarity". A suspect was arrested, Brudzinski said.
Polish broadcaster TVN reported that the attacker called from the stage that he was imprisoned under the government of the Civic Platform, a party to which the mayor used to belong, despite his innocence.
Donald Tusk, a former Polish Prime Minister who is co-founder of Civil Platform and comes from Gdansk, wrote on Twitter: "Let's all pray for Mayor Adamowicz. Pawel, we're with you."
Adamowicz was mayor of Gdansk, a Baltic port city, since 1998. He was part of the democratic opposition that was born in that city under the leadership of Lech Walesa in the 1980s.

As mayor he is seen as a progressive voice and has supported LGBT rights and tolerance for minorities. He showed solidarity with the Jewish community when the synagogue of the city broke windows last year and strongly denounced vandalism.
Other leaders expressed their support for Mr Adamowicz.
President Andrzej Duda said that while he and the mayor have had political differences, today I am unconditional with him and his loved ones, just as – I hope – we are all compatriots. I pray for his return to health and full strength ".
TVN said that around 8:00 PM local time a man rushed onto the stage and shouted something. It said that the mayor had seen his belly.
Radio Gdansk reported that Adamowicz was stabbed in his heart, but did not mention the source.
Other Polish media reported that a knife was used in the attack.
