Police search for swimmer after suspected drowning in Byron Bay

A major search is underway for a swimmer who was seen struggling in the surf off Byron Bay’s Main Beach on Wednesday afternoon.

Two people told police they saw the man in the surf around 5:30 p.m.

A 22-year-old man said he tried to help the swimmer but was overwhelmed by the rough surf.

Local police, NSW Ambulance, Surf Life Saving, Fire and Rescue NSW, Marine Rescue and Queensland PolAir searched for the man following the reports, but were unable to find him.

The search was suspended around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday and will resume at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday.

Police found unclaimed personal items on the beach, but police said no one was reported missing.
