An May 14 article stated that a report from the Center for Crime and Justice Studies found that police are using unfair methods to raise their salaries. While the report found that police overtime spending has risen – and that the case was “ripe for review” – the suggestion was that it was caused by dishonesty or “tricks” from the mail, not the report. Officers can start claiming overtime 30 minutes after the end of a shift. The claim that agents make arrests outside normal working hours to increase their payments has been aired before, but we should have made it clear that this is a suspicion. We apologize for any confusion and the article has been changed.
