"It's been entertaining," Kendrick told Fox News about the surprising reaction to the photo, which stemmed from the desire to do something "happy and positive" to relieve the stress of returning to the parents' school.

"The face and the image certainly were not because I'm sad because I go to school," he explained. "I was definitely trying to describe the spirit of, hey, my mother is dragging me here to take my picture of the first day again."

School resource officers across the country have been taking similar photos and posting them on social media this week using the hashtag #SROChallenge.
