A body has been discovered in an unused mine shaft following reports of an incident at the workplace.

Authorities were called to the mine shaft near Dry Creek Road at Ellalong, east of Newcastle in New South Wales, at 12.45pm on Wednesday.

Police were informed by those present at the scene that a man had fallen into the decommissioned mine shaft.

Hunter Valley Police, Fire and Rescue NSW and paramedics are currently at the scene.

Several emergency vehicles, a mine rescue truck and more than a dozen first responders arrived at Dry Creek Road.

The area has been closed for the moment.
