Police are investigating a video posted on social media which appears to show a Manchester United fan making unhealthy gestures mocking Hillsborough’s disaster during Sunday’s FA Cup tie.
The clip, taken away from home after United’s dramatic 4-3 win, shows the United supporter pressing his hand to his face to imitate a crush as he leaves Old Trafford under Liverpool fans.
Greater Manchester officers said they ultimately made eight arrests at the match and added they were reviewing the video.
Two of those detained were United fans on suspicion of singing about tragedy. Throughout the match United fans chanted “murderers”, “always the victims, it’s never your fault” and “The Sun was right – you are murderers”.
Three Liverpool fans were arrested for possession of class A drugs, while a 46-year-old away supporter was arrested for possession of pyrotechnics. A flare was thrown into United’s disabled section from the Liverpool side of the stadium following a Mohamed Salah goal.

The man appeared to imitate pushing a wall, a reference to the Heysel stadium disaster in 1985, when 39 fans were killed.

George Fenning, 39, of Craigentinny Road, Edinburgh, was charged with possession of a class B drug, possession of a pyrotechnic and throwing a missile. He has since been released on bail.
Chief Inspector Jamie Collins said: “The arrests made are the result of our proactive, zero-tolerance approach to ensuring genuine supporters and spectators can enjoy the match safely.
“GMP can confirm that a 21-year-old man and a 59-year-old man have been arrested in connection with tragic chanting. Incidents of tragic chanting will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly.
He added: “We are also aware of images circulating on social media of a Manchester United supporter engaging in tragic chants.
“No arrests have yet been made, but GMP is working with both clubs to identify the individual linked to this incident.
“I hope these arrests will act as a deterrent to anyone attending future matches.”
The tragic chants reportedly include labeling Liverpool supporters as “always the victims, it’s never your fault” – a song which references the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.
