An arrest has been made after Manchester United’s stunning FA Cup win over Liverpool was marred by tragic chants.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they have detained an individual following allegations made at Old Trafford during Sunday’s quarter-final.

At various points during a thrilling clash, United fans were heard chanting “always the victims, it’s never your fault”, “The Sun was right, you are murderers” and “murderers”.

These songs refer to the tragedies of Hillsborough and Heysel. The Football Association was quick to condemn those involved, while GMP later confirmed action had been taken.

A spokesperson for the force said: “GMP can confirm that an arrest has been made in connection with the tragic chants at the Manchester United v Liverpool match this afternoon.

We all know fans taunting their opponents at football matches, but it is usually done in good humor and without offence. Today’s incidents have crossed the line of what is acceptable, and we will work closely with both clubs to identify anyone responsible for offenses committed at the event.

United are believed to have worked with both Liverpool and the police. They have already stressed that such chants are unacceptable and will lead to consequences.

Before last season’s match between the two rivals at Anfield, managers Erik ten Hag and Jurgen Klopp called for an end to the chanting around the tragedies at Hillsborough, Heysel and Munich.

Three United fans were arrested last month following chants relating to Hillsborough while they played Liverpool in December.

Following discussions between the sport’s governing bodies and the Crown Prosecution Service, it was agreed that singing unhealthy songs about disasters such as Munich and Hillsborough would be considered a criminal offence.

Anyone found guilty of tragic chants could face stadium bans and possible prosecution, while stewards have reportedly been given new guidelines to raise awareness of the problem and have greater power to deal with supporters guilty.
