Police have appealed for information to identify a man (pictured) who allegedly sexually assaulted a 66-year-old grandmother in the Melbourne suburb of St Albans.

Locals have been urged to help police identify a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a grandmother while she played with her grandson.

The incident occurred in St Albans, west of Melbourne, in December last year.

The 66-year-old woman was playing with her grandson in a nature strip at the intersection of Alfreda Street and Craigielea Avenue when the man approached the couple.

The man, whom the grandmother does not know, is believed to have asked her for cigarettes.

The woman told the man several times that she didn’t have any.

The grandmother then walked away from the man, but he allegedly followed her and then sexually assaulted her.

He also allegedly made inappropriate comments while the alleged assault was taking place.

The elderly woman shouted at the man before he drove off down Craigielea Avenue and Collins Street.

Later he returned the same way.

The alleged offender has been described as being of African appearance, is 175cm tall and has a slim build.

The man also has a mark on his left cheek and prominent teeth.

He was last seen wearing a black and white varsity jacket, a brown cap, a black shirt and dark skinny jeans.

Detectives released CCTV footage and compiled a sketch of the man, who they believe will be able to assist them with their investigations.
