A woman walking while talking on her cell phone was mugged in broad daylight in the heart of Melbourne.

The victim, who is in her 30s, was walking down Russell Street around 3 p.m. on July 17 when the device was snatched from her hand.

The woman chased the two female perpetrators and managed to retrieve her phone, but she was assaulted in the process.

On Friday, Victoria Police released photos of two hooded women they want to speak to in connection with the incident.

The first female is white from the late teens to early twenties, about 165 cm long with bleached blond hair.

She was wearing gray sweatpants, pink shoes, and white lettering on the front of her black sweater.

The second female is described as white, in the late teens to early twenties and about 170 cm long with dark hair.

She was wearing a black sweater with white lettering on the sleeves, gray or black sweatpants, and white shoes.

Police are encouraging anyone who witnesses the incident or has information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333000.
