Manchester United failed to end their four-year wait for a trophy on Wednesday after losing to Villarreal on penalties.

Struggling to defeat Unai Emery’s LaLiga opponents in Gdansk, United felt heartbroken when David de Gea missed his penalty to watch Villarreal claim the trophy in the most dramatic way.

The result was visible Emery becomes the first manager to run the Europa League of UEFA Cup for the fourth time and showed the world why Pau Torres has multiple suitors.

While Lindelof and Marcus Rashford failed to impress for Manchester United – as they were responsible for Villarreal’s equalizing goal and failed to score the winner.

Sportsmail’s Adrian Kajumba gives his verdict on how each player performed in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.

VILLARREAL – 4-4-2

ROLES 6

His kicks were shaky but largely undisturbed thanks to the defense in front of him.

FOYTH 6.5 BOOKED

The head was bandaged after colliding with Pogba, but recovered well to last most of the match.

ALBIOL 7.5

Veteran put his body on the line, especially when Villarreal had something to hold on to.

PAU TORRES 8

The touted defender had some early nervous moments, but soon showed why he has suitors.

PEDRAZA 6

Hands full on left back with Greenwood and Wan-Bissaka against him. I kind of hung in there.

PINO 6.5

Teen was lively and dangerous and not afraid to go on target.

CAPOUE 7 Booked

Not great in possession, but did a good job of helping protect the defenses.

PAIR 7.5

Line up the opener with a free kick and in position repeatedly to assist the four backwards.

TRIGUEROS 5

Crawl into space, but had a decent chance. After that little impact on the game.

G MORENO 7.5

Villarreal’s great threat and showed why he had to volley the Spaniards ahead.

MANCHESTER UNITED – 4-2-3-1

Yellow: Bailly Red: N / A

THE GEA 6

Picked for Henderson. Helpless for goal and was the unfortunate man who missed crucial penalty kick.

WAN-BISSAKA 7

Often pushed forward on his 100th United appearance. Had few problems going the other way.

LINDELOF 6

I don’t want to see the opener anymore. I didn’t see goalscorer Moreno until it was too late.

Lindelof was responsible for the first goal, as he only saw Moreno when it was too late

BAILLY 6 BOOKED

Great night against his old club. Did okay except for a heart-in-the-mouth second half moment.

SHAW 7

Solid defensive and more effective on offense as United stepped things up in the second period.

MCTOMINAY 8.5

Plenty to do, starting as a defensive midfielder. Didn’t stop running, working and researching.

POGBA 7.5

Back in midfield and noticeably off to a good start, pulling the strings …

GREENWOOD 7.5

Involved in many of United’s best moments with some of his touches and passages.

FERNANDES 6

Frustrated and squeezed out of the first half by Villarreal but had more influence after half time.

RASHFORD 5

Frustrating night. Too often made the wrong final decision, but a shot led to an equalizer.

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER 6.5

United largely dominated. Solskjaer provided a much-needed improvement in the second half, but late changes allowed Villarreall to regain a foothold in the game.

Referee: C Turpin (Fra) 7 – Keeps good control of the game with few real flash points or controversies to bother him.
