One AU is the equivalent of approximately 93 million miles.

“Using samples of the orbital elements and estimates of such a planet’s radius and albedo, we calculate the probability distribution function of planet nine’s sky position and its brightness,” the researchers wrote in the study.

“For many reasonable assumptions, Planet Nine is closer and brighter than initially expected, although the probability distribution includes a long tail to greater distances, and uncertainties in Planet Nine’s radius and albedo could yield fainter objects.”

Brown and Batygin created the map by looking at some of the known objects in the Kuiper Belt — icy bodies beyond Neptune — many of which have strange orbits that the researchers believe are influenced by Planet Nine.

The researchers used the clustering of the Kuiper Belt objects as a sign that Planet Nine exists, given how unusual it would be for this to happen naturally.

“After updating calculations of observational biases, we find that the clustering remains significant with a 99.6% confidence level,” the study authors wrote, meaning there is only a 0.4 percent chance that the clustering is a weird one. is a whimsical phenomenon.
