Placeholder for Nagelsmann? Lampard new Chelsea coach

Date:

Hardly a day has passed since Julian Nagelsmann had to resign as a coach at Bayern without new rumors about the future of the 35-year-old. In particular, speculation about an engagement at Chelsea is increasing. However, the Blues are opting for a different solution, at least in the short term.

Club icon Frank Lampard will take over as coach at Chelsea until the end of the season. The Londoners announced on Thursday.

“We are delighted to welcome Frank back to Stamford Bridge. Frank is a Premier League legend and a legend at this club. As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach, we want the club and our fans to be united clear and stable plan for the rest of the season,” owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said in a statement.

What the result of the “exhaustive” search for a permanent coach will look like is still open. Most recently, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who had already predicted Julian Nagelsmann’s end at Bayern Munich, reported that Nagelsmann was a top candidate for the Chelsea bench.

On Wednesday, there should even have been another exchange between the Nagelsmann side and the English first division team. The aim was to push a decision forward, according to Romano. Romano reveals that Nagelsmann has been a favorite for the Blues post since last Sunday.

Chelsea parted ways on Sunday after only 31 competitive games from team manager Graham Potter – and thus from the coach who surprisingly replaced Thomas Tuchel in September 2022. Tuchel, in turn, is now at the helm at Bayern Munich. In London, the Spaniard Bruno Saltor took over on an interim basis, but the club did not manage more than a 0-0 draw against Liverpool, who were also in trouble. Now Lampard takes his place.

Ex-Spain coach probably Nagelsmann’s biggest competitor

If Romano is to be believed, the chances are not bad that Nagelsmann will try his luck at Stamford Bridge in the summer. The recently traded Tite, Luciano Spalletti and Roberto De Zerbi should not play a role in the considerations of the Chelsea management. A commitment of the Spanish ex-national coach Luis Enrique should definitely be an option.

The 52-year-old, accompanied by his agent, is said to have made his way to London on Wednesday for talks with the Premier League club, it is said.

Nevertheless, “talkSPORT” also wants to know that Nagelsmann has the best cards. According to the radio station, the coach, who began his career at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, should be particularly happy about a mega budget for new players if he is hired.

Among them could be a star that Nagelsmann already knows from his time at RB Leipzig: Christopher Nkunku. According to persistent rumours, the French striker has already agreed to a change.

Meanwhile, it is unclear whether Nagelsmann can imagine the job at Chelsea. Most recently, it was speculated that he would not immediately throw himself into a new task after his departure in Munich. In addition, Nagelsmann is still under contract with FC Bayern until the summer of 2026. The German record champion would have to be involved in negotiations. According to “Bild”, Munich will also demand a fee.
