- The Professional Jockeys’ Association has defended the 18-year-old star
- They claim that the teen jockey is the victim of a malicious smear campaign
- The short clip appeared online from an account claiming to belong to the rider
The Professional Jockeys’ Association has said a video purporting to show Lincoln Handicap-winning apprentice jockey Benoit De La Sayette who took cocaine on Saturday was maliciously edited to infect the 18-year-old rising star.
The PJA added in a statement that it was intended to “ cause significant damage to a young man at the start of his career. ”
The eight-second clip appeared on social media from an account claiming to be of the rider who won the Lincoln at Haqeeqy in Doncaster for his boss Newmarket trainer John Gosden.
A video that appears to show Benoit De La Sayette (pictured Saturday at Doncaster Racecourse) was taking cocaine has been leaked
The PJA statement read: ‘There is a movie tweeted from an account claiming to be of Benoit De La Sayette.
The film was apparently first put into circulation in the wake of Benoit’s victory aboard Haqeeqy at the Unibet Lincoln in Doncaster on Saturday, March 27.
To be clear, this report does not belong to Benoit, nor is it under his control. This carefully edited film maliciously suggests that Benoit used cocaine after winning the aforementioned race.
Benoit lives with his parents and was driven to and from Doncaster by his father on Saturday with another jockey and spent the evening at home with his parents.
The Professional Jockeys’ Association has claimed the video was maliciously edited to contaminate the 18-year-old rising star (pictured winning Lincoln Handicap over the weekend)
He also drove in Doncaster on Sunday and was driven back and forth by his father.
The film is actually from October 2019 when he was 16, nine months before Benoit got a license. He was at a party in Lambourn filming while around cocaine used by others, not himself. He didn’t use cocaine.
The person responsible for the distribution of this film clearly intends to do significant damage to a young man at the start of his career. The PJA will take steps to try to get the account that posted the video removed. ‘
De La Sayette, who only had his first stages at the end of last year, immediately impressed with 10 winners from just 27 stages. It has led to the conversation that he is a candidate to become the 2021 apprentice champion.
