Spain stepped onto the pitch at the Al Thumama Stadium in Qatar on Wednesday night and proceeded to devastate the hopeful 31st-ranked Costa Rican team with a 7-0 thrashing.
Midfielder Dani Olmo opened the scoring in the 12th minute and the pressure continued until Álvaro Morata scored his team’s seventh unanswered goal in the 92nd minute.
Gavi, Spain’s youngest player at just over 18, became the youngest player to score a World Cup goal since Brazilian legend Pele’s goal in the 1958 final.
The Spanish team is a mix of promising youngsters, such as Gavi and Pedri, 19, along with a selection of veterans of the season.
Throughout the match, the Spanish team exhibited near complete control of the ball, holding 80 per cent of overall possession as Costa Rica struggled to keep up the pace for the remainder of the match. Faced with the constant onslaught of Spain, Costa Rica did not manage a single shot on goal.
