Coastal catastrophe as photos show Malibu’s famous beachfront homes worth millions of dollars destroyed in LA fire

The Segal family had owned their Malibu waterfront estate for 50 years when it was wiped out by the blazing Palisades inferno

It is one of the most recognizable neighborhoods in the world and is synonymous with sun-drenched luxury with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

But much of the eastern end of Malibu is now in ruins as a result of the Palisades Fire, and many of the notable beachfront homes and upscale restaurants are now in ruins.

Celebrity haunt Moonshadows Malibu was among the lost restaurants, as was local landmark The Reel Inn.

Both had regulars: Kamala Harris, Cindy Crawford and Paris Hilton were all fans of The Reel Inn, while Moonshadows was adored by the likes of Mel Gibson, Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears.

The eateries are among 1,280 buildings destroyed by the fire, which is still burning and only 14 percent contained.

But while the loss of the restaurants has hit locals hard, for many, their homes are gone as well — including some of the spectacular beach houses along the sand that were as much a Malibu landmark as the Topanga Canyon Motel that also burned down.

From cozy single-family homes to glamorous properties with a serious Hollywood background: DailyMail.com estimates the damage.

THE BELOVED FAMILY HOME

With its sun-drenched wooden deck with steps leading straight to the beach, 21506 was once an idyllic home for Tina Segel, 63, and her family.

But now the property lies in blackened ruins, as does her parents’ neighboring home. Like her famous neighbors Paris Hilton and Candy Spelling, little remains of the 50-year-old Malibu resident’s four-bedroom home.

On Friday, the former news anchor and her daughter Katie and son Henry were allowed to return to Malibu to see the remains of their home, where they were photographed by DailyMail.com as they scoured the wreckage for anything that remained intact – including a cross- shaped candle holder.

And miraculously, their paper mail in the mailbox emerged unscathed.

FORMER HOME OF HOLLYWOOD MOTHER

One of the most glamorous homes on the Pacific Coast Highway, the white-painted 21644 was once owned by Garda Maritz, the mother of South African star Charlize Theron.

Maritz has since moved into a $3.3 million home in LA’s Studio City neighborhood.

Now a smoldering pile of rubble, before the Palisades fire, the $7.9 million home had beautiful ocean views and direct beach access.

The four-bedroom property also featured a chef’s kitchen, a lush garden complete with its own waterfall and a terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

PALACE FIT FOR A PLAYWRITER

22048, a four-bedroom beach house, has had a number of illustrious owners, including the late Canadian playwright and screenwriter Bernard Slade and his actress wife Jill Foster.

Foster famously played Betty in Bewitched, while Slade’s portfolio included making sitcoms The Flying Nun and The Partridge Family.

More recently, the house was occupied by entertainment executive Bryan Turner, whose careers included Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg launched.

THE RESIDENCE OF THE ART COLLECTOR

Unlike many Pacific Coast Highway homes, 22240 has no celebrity pedigree and was owned by luxury furniture executive Melvin Rosenthal, who died in 2022 at age 93 and left the house to his son Larry.

In addition to an eye for high-end home furnishings, Rosenthal had another talent: collecting art with nine works by 20th-century masters Ed Ruscha, Hans Hoffman and Robert Motherwell sold at auction in New York after his death.

The enormous heat of the Palisades Fire split the house in two.
