An “erratic” mother has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her two young children to death in their New York City apartment, after police officers overlooked the children’s bodies during their first visit to the scene.

Dimone Fleming, 22, is suspected of stabbing her three-year-old son Deshawn and 11-month-old Octavius to death before hiding them in a bathtub in the Bronx.

Police arrested Fleming, who was found ‘erratic and naked’ before realizing that the two youths had been stabbed multiple times in the neck and torso.

The horrific incident occurred in an apartment at a family shelter near Mount Hope around 7:20 p.m. Saturday. Emergency services were called to the scene twice, and only on the second trip did they find the young children dead.

Witnesses who lived in the building told DailyMail.com they saw the frantic mother holding her head and screaming: ‘What did I do? What did I do? in the hallway moments before the police arrived.

The children’s father, who discovered his children lifeless in the full bathtub, had argued with Fleming the day before. He left the house a day earlier and stayed in his car overnight, according to DailyMail.com.

Fleming, who has not yet been declared an official suspect, remains in custody as a person of interest in the case. No charges have been filed.

Police were initially called to the scene due to Fleming’s ‘erratic’ behaviour. She was taken out, but apparently did not realize that her children were dead in the bathroom. It was only when the children’s father arrived that the police were alerted to the children’s tragic death.

The 22-year-old mother was taken into custody around 7:50 p.m. after officers were initially dispatched to the residence after receiving a call complaining about her erratic behavior.

Upon arrival, police said, they found a naked woman in the kitchen lighting objects. They remained on the scene for 30 minutes before taking her into custody, apparently unaware that the children were dead in the bathroom.

She was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Just 10 minutes after officers left, the boys’ father returned to find the two boys unresponsive in the apartment and called officers a second time around 7:55 p.m.

Before his arrival, neighbors helped the father get the children out of the bathtub, which was filled with water and covered with a sheet, and tried to resuscitate them, DailyMail.com has learned.

They were transported to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where they were pronounced dead, according to police.

The mother is currently in custody as a person of interest, Patrol Borough Bronx Deputy Chief Louis De Ceglie said at 11 p.m. Saturday outside the building at 246 Echo Place.

“Officers arrived and found a naked 22-year-old female inside the apartment on the third floor acting irrationally,” Chief de Ceglie told reporters outside the building.

De Ceglie said the initial report received by officers warned of “erratic but non-violent female performance” without weapons.

“Officers took the woman into custody without incident and awaited an ambulance response.”

It is believed that the officers did not see the bodies of the boys on their first stop at the home, because they were hiding in the bathroom at the time of their response.

Sometime before the police arrived a second time, the children’s father, in a panic, made an impassioned plea for help upon discovering the bodies of his children.
