Phoebe Waller-Bridge opens up about her decision to walk away from Amazon Mr. and Mrs. Smith series.
The English actress and screenwriter recently sat with Vanity Fair where she discussed her eight-figure deal with Amazon, why she’s the Mr. and Mrs. Smith series and whether she will direct the next James Bond movie.
Although the multiple hyphen closed the door on her popular streaming show Flea bag with the second and final season in 2019, there was potential to see a new project from her multi-year deal with Amazon in a Mr. and Mrs. Smith TV reboot in which she was supposed to appear alongside actor and rapper Donald Glover.
In September 2021, it was announced that Waller-Bridge was dropping the direct adaptation of the Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie film to the series, with sources saying that Waller-Bridge had a different creative vision for the series than Glover.
When she opened up about walking away from the series, Waller-Bridge said she “really cared about the project”.
“I put my heart and soul into that show for six months and I really cared — still care,” said Waller-Bridge. And I know it’s going to be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision. Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work.”
Still, the actress also feels like she wants Amazon studios right after they, in her words, “put a point on her.” Describing herself as “creatively controlling,” Waller-Bridge said Amazon understands what she’s like, explaining, “They’ve been with me through this process where I thought, ‘I’ll get there, but I want it to be damn amazing. .'”
As for rumors that Waller-Bridge is directing the next James Bond movie after only directing one music video, she laughed it off. “My mom sent me that rumor too,” Waller-Bridge said, laughing it off shyly. “So the obvious jump is James Bond.”
Later, Waller-Bridge also shared some surprising advice when asked if she could tell her 20-year-old self something. ‘Are you kidding me? I would ask her to tell me everything! Remind me, remind me. And she’d say, ‘Fuck ’em all. Go out and burn it down,” she said.
