Phillip Schofield’s position on This Morning in turmoil as viewers turn against him in Holly feud

Date:

Phillip Schofield’s stance on This Morning became increasingly untenable after ratings fell by 170,000.

ITV bosses were ‘bewildered’ when they learned audiences had fallen nearly an unprecedented 20 per cent from 894,000 last week to 724,000 for Monday’s episode after tensions rose between Ms Willoughby and Schofield.

Today, the pair appeared together for the second time since Schofield, 61, made his extraordinary statement about the pair’s friendship but did not elaborate on their feud. Viewers also complained about being “fake” again.

Despite this, the feuding pair will be back on the schedule tomorrow, ITV has confirmed.

Their feud began in September when the pair were criticized for not lining up for the Queen in state.

And the Daily Mail has learned that chefs are now tossing names for potential replacements, with housewives’ favorite Rylan Clark being cited as a preferred choice by some channel executives.

When he did holiday cover for Schofield last summer alongside Ruth Langsford, he was a big hit with viewers.

A source at the network said: “There’s no question viewers have turned against Phil, they don’t want to see him anymore, it’s as simple as that.

There’s been a lot of name kicking around, a lot of talk about Alison Hammond, but Rylan’s been thrown into the mix too. When he and Ruth hosted it was an undeniable success.

“The editor, Martin Frizell, has made it no secret that he’s over Phil, but the drop in ratings will exacerbate that.”

Schofield’s PR machine has gone into overdrive in recent days in an effort to make him seem more popular with viewers. But judging by social media, it has made little difference.

We also reveal that as well as Ms Willoughby, 42, who was kept in the dark about his brother’s court case – which sparked the most recent tension between the couple – some senior chiefs at ITV were too.

It has made him feel bad.

Meanwhile, former This Morning presenter Fern Britton took a swing at Schofield, with whom she presented the show and later reportedly had a falling out.

She wrote on Twitter that she and another ex-This Morning presenter Eamonn Holmes – who also had a falling out with Schofield – enjoyed a phone call.

Ms Britton, 65, wrote: ‘Unexpected phone calls from old friends are so lovely. Just had the best catch up with @EamonnHolmes. I think we’ve known each other since the 80’s when we were babies. Shoot the wind.’ Her words were followed by three red heart emojis.

Earlier today, Willoughby was seen sharing a supportive hug with Kate Garraway at the Prince’s Trust Awards on Tuesday, but Schofield, who is an ambassador for the trust, was nowhere to be seen.

According to his website: ‘Outside of his work, Phillip is an ambassador for the charity The Prince’s Trust, which spends time supporting vulnerable young people in the UK.’

Instead, he chose to go to the London Wine Fair to support the brand he works with, When in Rome Wine.

On his Instagram Stories, the TV presenter was seen laughing in snaps taken while he was on the stand for When in Rome Wine at the London Wine Fair at the Olympia conference centre.

Despite the ongoing drama, Willoughby seemed unfazed by the lavish event.

Viewership on This Morning is currently down significantly compared to the duo’s major Christmas show in 2022, which attracted 1.3 million viewers. In the first four weeks of 2021, an average of 1.4 million viewers tuned in.

Today, viewers described the show’s “awkward” vibe with one tweet: “Haven’t seen the show in months. I thought I’d watch today’s, but it’s clear the collaboration is tense.’

During a segment of the show, Holly and Phil were told by astrologer Hagan Fox that an “awkward phase is coming to an end.”

The hosts went silent after his prediction amid their friendship spat.

Insiders working on This Morning said Schofield has become ‘increasingly withdrawn’ on set, with one telling The Mirror: ‘He seems dejected and spends a lot of time in his dressing room. We’re worried about him.’

It comes as Holly wrote a newsletter for her well-being brand Wylde Moon, which showed the star was in a reflective mood.

“The older I get, the more I realize how daunting the concept of the passage of time can be,” she mused. ‘I can always remember my grandma saying things like ‘wait until you get to my age…then it really starts to fly by’ – and now I really get it.

“If this resonates with you, I’d like to share with you some advice that one of my friends gave me when we were discussing this very subject.

“She told me that instead of worrying about how fast things are going, we should look at things differently and realize that with every moment (big or small) that passes, we are creating a future full of joy, love and endless possibilities.’

In her newsletter, Holly also urged fans to try to look at the positive sides of life.

She wrote, “If we can remember to think about how lucky we are to make all these memories, the passage of time can feel very positive. It’s kind of like that old saying, “Time is a luxury valued by the wise.”
