Phillip Schofield is returning to mainstream TV after signing on for a new show, 16 months after leaving This Morning.

The presenter secretly filmed the Channel 5 special, Castaway, in which he lives on a tropical island in the Indian Ocean for 10 days.

Schofield, 62, will speak about his acrimonious exit from ITV as he fends for himself on the island, off the coast of Madagascar.

Viewers will see the axed presenter speak about the emotional impact of his exile from mainstream television after news of his affair with a 20-year-old runner emerged on daytime show This Morning.

A source said The sun‘In recent months, Phil has received quite a few offers for various things, but he has flatly rejected them all.

‘This type of challenge has always attracted him and, after consulting with friends and family, he decided to take it on. It has all been very secret and it has been an incredibly quick process to keep the news secret.

‘After 42 years in television, Phillip has learned from some great crews and teams how to film and tell a story.’

The source added: ‘With 10 days to himself, with no camera crews or production around, he filmed some incredibly raw footage – some of it making for difficult and emotional viewing.

‘But I wanted the chance to share his story, unedited and honest, and let viewers see another side of him.

‘While this is a great achievement for Channel 5 and huge for Phillip, he is in no rush to return to television full-time just yet; he remains very shaken and is now simply taking some time to assess things before making any major decisions.’

The three-part series will air on Channel 5 from Monday evening and will be Schofield’s first TV job since leaving This Morning under a cloud in 2023.
