Phil Neville is adamant that he didn’t get the job at Inter Miami from his old friend and former Manchester United teammate David Beckham.
After joining the American outfit in January, Neville says the interview process was “ as difficult as anyone else he had been through ” and claims it was difficult to “ convince ” the owners that he was the “ right person. ”
The former Lioness manager took his first win against Philadelphia Union on April 25 after moving to Stateside.

Neville played with Beckham in Manchester United from 1994 to 2003 and with the England national team from 1996 to 2007.
The former Class of ’92 couple also partly owns the fourth level Salford City in England.
However, Neville maintains that his relationship with Beckham has nothing to do with his appointment as manager of the MLS club.
Speak against TalkSport, Neville said, ‘When I looked at this job, I have to say, and you probably won’t believe me, but the job interview was just as difficult as I ever did.

‘In terms of persuasion – not David, David knows my qualities and we had talked about that for a long time – but the other owners, the Mas family who are major shareholders in the organization, wanted to know and they wanted to choose the right person.
‘They had fired a manager after 12 months, which they didn’t want to do, and they knew they had to make big, big changes and they invested a lot of money in the facilities.
‘Our training ground is worth £ 80 million and it’s as good as anything in European football – it’s the best in America.
“In the end they liked me, they hired me and we got off to a good start.”

Beckham – who took ownership of a future MLS team at a discounted rate as part of his transfer to the LA Galaxy in 2007 – has also received allegations that he hired Neville because of their friendship.
He said at a press conference, ‘Of course people will always turn around and say, oh, it’s because he’s your friend. It has nothing to do with the fact that he is my friend.
‘Our ownership group doesn’t just employ our friends. We employ the best people, be it on the field, off the field, in our back room, the staff we have in our training facility, in the stadium.
‘We run a serious football club here. And I think we end up hiring people who we think are best suited for the job. ‘
Inter Miami is seventh in the Eastern Conference with four points from two games and will play against Nashville later on Sunday, their third game of the season.
