Warning: Peugeot global chief executive Linda Jackson has expressed concern

The push for electric cars faces a “Darwin moment” that could drive many manufacturers to extinction, Peugeot’s global CEO has warned.

Speaking at the Guild of Motoring Writers’ annual dinner in London, where Linda Jackson received the President’s Trophy for her contribution to the industry, he added: ‘We’re all trying to sell more electric cars to people who may not want to buy them.’

Many in the sector feel they and consumers need help, with more public charging points and incentives to buy electric vehicles.

But Mrs Jackson said: “There doesn’t seem to be much help on the way.”

“I think it’s going to be a roller coaster.

“It was ‘a big question’ whether the government’s goal of going fully electric by 2030 would be met.”

Coventry-born Jackson has been Peugeot’s global chief executive since 2021.

As chief executive of Citroën in 2014, she became the first British woman to lead a car manufacturer, and only the third woman to do so in the entire car industry.

To women starting a career, she urged: ‘My career stood out when I took risks. So go ahead. There are no glass ceilings.”
