Recording himself giving an update on the surgery, while still wearing bandages on his head, he said: ‘Good morning guys. I’ve had a lot of messages.

‘I guess it was an alarming sight to have my head bandaged.

‘I posted this because I really want people to be careful when they’re out in the sun and use proper protection.’

Petra attempted to raise awareness as she continued to speak about her own experience, revealing that until recently she didn’t care about protecting her own skin.

She captioned her latest clip: ‘Thank you to everyone who reached out to me yesterday to tell me my story.

‘I’m recovering and doing well, but this is a reminder to take sun damage seriously… wear sunscreen and avoid tanning beds at all costs!’

Earlier this week, the heiress first sparked concern after sharing a selfie with her head wrapped in a bandage.

The media star appeared makeup-free in the Instagram photo as she pouted in front of the lens while wearing her pajamas.

And on Friday, the socialite took to her Instagram page to reassure fans about her current recovery, thanking them for the overwhelming support.

Petra captioned the photo: “Guys, stay out of the sun. I wish I knew more about it when I was younger and its dangers. Please use sunscreen daily and a hat.”

The mother of three did not specify what had happened. MailOnline has contacted Petra’s representatives for comment.

One of the main risks of not using SPF is overexposure to UV rays, which causes premature skin aging and damage that can lead to skin cancer.

The NHS recommends everyone use at least SPF 30 protection.

Studies also suggest that regular users of sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher can cut their risk of melanoma (the deadliest type of skin cancer) in half.

Around 15,000 Britons and 100,000 Americans are diagnosed with melanoma, the most common form of skin cancer, each year.

Melanoma often grows quickly and can quickly break through the skin and reach the blood vessels underneath.

Once cancer cells enter the bloodstream, the disease can spread throughout the body.

Surgery is the main treatment for melanoma. Radiation therapy, drugs, and chemotherapy are also sometimes used.

HOW TO STAY SAFE IN THE SUN

Sunburn increases the risk of skin cancer.

It can happen abroad or in the UK.

To protect yourself from the sun, experts recommend:

  • Seek shade between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun’s rays are typically strongest.
  • Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher
  • Apply sunscreen 30 minutes after, and again just before, UV exposure.
  • Opt for a water-resistant sunscreen if necessary and reapply after swimming, sweating or using a towel.
  • Cover up with protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Take special care with babies and young children. Babies under six months of age should be kept away from direct sunlight.
  • Do not use hammocks or sun lamps.
  • Check your moles and skin for any changes.
