Pete Buttigieg has been ridiculed on social media after appearing to be organizing a bike ride to the White House in an effort to promote his green credentials.
The Secretary of Transportation, 39, was seen riding his bicycle near the building on Thursday to attend a cabinet meeting with Joe Biden. It appeared that the politician had entered the Department of Transportation three miles away from his office.
However, images of it WFMZ-TV quickly went viral after allegedly revealing Buttigieg’s security detail that the bike was just blocks from the White House from the back of a ‘gas-guzzling’ SUV.
The view led conservative critics to argue that Buttigieg – who serves as the Secretary of Transportation – had pretended to be driving much farther than he actually had.
“Pete Buttigieg’s dog and pony show,” one person raged on Twitter.
Use an armored Suburban to get a bike a short distance from the destination. Unload it and drive in with a security detail in tow, just like it’s saving energy. ‘

Another agreed: “Pete Buttigieg wants you to believe that he saves energy as Transport Minister. The idea is to use a gas-guzzling Suburban to drive within earshot of your destination, unload a bike, and ride in as if you were coming from home. The theater never stops. ‘
Another laughed at the leaked images of the bicycle unloading.
“You don’t get a behind-the-scenes look every day while government propaganda is being produced,” wrote the amused Twitter user.
Some have argued that Democrats were more likely to organize photo ops in an attempt to send out a “ virtue signal. ”
However, others claimed that politicians from both parties carefully crafted their images to appear authentic.
‘They do the bare minimum because they know this is all they need. It’s all calculated, ”one of them said.

The Department of Transportation told The New York Post that Buttigeg was “riding his bike to the White House cabinet meeting.”
They didn’t say whether the bike ride started at Buttigieg’s office, which is located in the DOT building three miles away.
However, they did confirm that he drove all the way back.
Last week, Buttigieg came under fire for suggesting drivers should pay taxes on the miles they drive in an effort to fund infrastructure improvements.
In the past, the gas tax was the obvious way to do it. It isn’t anymore, so a so-called vehicle mileage tax or mileage tax, whatever you want to call it, could be one way to do it, “he told CNBC.
Critics complained that such a tax would negatively affect rural Americans who have to drive long distances to work.
Buttigieg backed away from the idea after widespread outrage, saying such a tax was “not part of the talk” in Biden’s new $ 3 billion infrastructure plan, which also includes plans for “green” projects.
