Pete Hegseth is officially sworn in as Secretary of Defense as all seven children watch.

Hegseth took an oath of office alongside Vice President J.D. Vance in the presence of his wife and children.

The US Senate on Friday narrowly confirmed the former Fox News co-host as head of the Pentagon.

After being sworn in, Hegseth thanked President Trump and described the job as an “honor of a lifetime.”

He added, “We look forward to having the support of our troops as we pursue peace through strength, put America first and improve our military.”

Hegseth also thanked Vance for “breaking the tie” by supporting his nomination after his vote was the tie-breaking vote.

The 44-year-old added: “There were so many people in here and allies on the outside supporting us.

“I want to thank the war fighters, I want to thank the men and women who wear the uniform.

“Every time I stand on a stage, the first thing that goes through my mind are the guys I served with on the battlefield.”

“We will put America first, we will bring peace through strength. The three principles I talked about are what we will bring to that Pentagon.

“Restore the warrior ethos in everything we do, rebuild our military and restore deterrents, we don’t want to fight wars. We want to put an end to it in a responsible way.’

He added: “If we have to fight them, we will use overwhelming and decisive force to destroy the enemy and bring our boys home.”

Hegseth is Donald Trump’s most controversial appointment yet and he was skating on thin ice before receiving a passing vote from senators on Friday.

Immediately after Trump announced Hegseth’s nomination in November, the candidate was dogged by allegations including drinking problems, sexual misconduct and poor business judgment.

The father of seven denies wrongdoing in those cases, and he credits God and his third wife Jennifer for helping him change course. “I’m not perfect,” he testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee, as his wife sat directly behind her husband in a show of support.

But in the past 24 hours, just before his final confirmation, several Republicans turned their backs on Trump’s nominee and said they would not vote for him.

Nevertheless, Hegseth was confirmed to the top Pentagon job, proving that Donald Trump’s MAGA mandate has won over even the most skeptical senators.

However, Hegseth was not able to win over all Republicans. Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska revealed they would not support the candidate, in part because of the scandals hanging over him.

Mitch McConnell also voted against Hegseth, and in a strange scene he was seen celebrating with Democrats after the vote despite their loss.
