An influencer shocked by the huge amount she was charged for mashed avocado on toast and a sandwich has divided the internet.

Mea Jasmin was shocked to pay $40 for a takeaway breakfast at a Perth cafe over the weekend.

The influencer expressed her disbelief in a video posted on TikTok titled ‘The cost of living is a joke in Australia’ and showed the contents of takeaway food containers while exhaling slowly.

“I’m not going to say anything, but I asked for mashed avocado. I asked for mashed avocado and that’s exactly what they gave me,” she said.

‘I’m trying not to laugh.’

The inside of the container had two slices of toast with avocado on the side, with a garnish that appeared to be dukkah or nuts.

The influencer then opened the second container.

“I got myself a vegan eggplant sandwich. I paid $40, guys. I’m just going to leave it at that. It might taste amazing,” he said.

The sandwich appeared to consist of two slices of tomato, mashed avocado, and a slice of eggplant.

Many viewers, who called the costs “outlandish”, also couldn’t believe she had ordered and paid for expensive takeaway meals.

“Didn’t you see the price before you ordered?” one commented.

Another added: “The problem is that you paid. I would have said no thanks and walked away.”

A third wrote: “The problem is that if we pay that, they will continue to charge us.”

Mea told her followers: ‘The heartbreaking thing was that this was my favourite breakfast place for FIVE YEARS and they had recently changed ownership and what they served me compared to before was shocking to say the least.’

The influencer added that she usually prepares a lot of meals but there are days when it is not possible.

Many Australians urged the influencer to eat more at home and pay a fraction of the cost.

“I wouldn’t pay that much… I cook at home most of the time. Plus, it usually tastes better!” wrote one.

Mea replied: “I totally agree with you, mate! I cook 90 percent of the food at home myself, so it’s a huge disappointment when you end up eating out and it doesn’t live up to your expectations.”

The influencer’s post comes at a time when many hospitality businesses are having a hard time after Covid.

CreditorWatch predicts that 9.1 percent of companies in this ailing sector will go bankrupt in the next 12 months as customers tighten their spending controls, especially if interest rates do not fall.
