Perfume experts reveal why you should change your fragrance every season, especially in summer

As the warm summer months approach, you swap your sneakers for sandals, your jeans for shorts, and your strong winter scents for lighter summer ones.

Did you know there’s a reason you should switch out your winter perfume for a different scent?

Not only can a strong winter scent become a headache-inducing scent in the warmer months, but the important notes can easily fade away, leaving you with a fragrance that’s almost unrecognizable.

FEMAIL spoke to aroma experts to find out why It is necessary to lighten the perfume depending on the season, especially in the warmer months, to ensure that the right notes remain.

Yvan JacquelinePresident of the Americas for high-end perfumery Marly Perfumes and Private Perfumes from the Beginningtold DailyMail.com that many people “prefer fresher scents during this warmer time.”

“Fresher scents tend to be more volatile and don’t last all day,” Yves warned. “The balance between brightness, woods and musk needs to be optimal for it to last a long time,” he said, mentioning his brand’s Galloway and Perseus.

“When looking for a summer fragrance, people tend to lean more towards scents with citrus, floral or aquatic notes,” Yvan said, adding that these notes are often considered uplifting and refreshing, which can transport people “to a person, place or time” and “set the stage for summer.”

‘Citrus notes include bergamot, mandarin orange and lemon,’ Yvan said.

‘The warmth of the bright morning sun is invoked in the fresh and energizing scent of citrus fragrances.

‘Floral notes include rose, peony and gardenia and can evoke memories of a blooming garden.

‘Aquatic notes, like those found in Sedley, are also popular in the summer. Aquatic notes evoke the feeling of being near an ocean or lake, making them the perfect escape to a quieter summer location.

‘Fragrances can be enhanced by warmer body temperatures as the projection becomes greater. Some lighter, citrusy scents may not last as long as woody, amber or ferny scents, but it depends on the wearer and their skin.’

“We can enhance our fragrance by spraying it generously not only on our pulse points, but also on our clothes and even layering it with a body cream or hair spray,” Yvan advised.

Jonnie Swarbrick, creative director of Du Bois FragranceHe explained that fragrances evolve during the day, especially in the heat.

Singapore-based Jonnie told DailyMail.com: “As the day progresses and temperatures fluctuate, the fragrance notes evolve differently on the skin.”

“The top notes, which are the lightest and most volatile, fade slightly, letting the middle and base notes dominate,” Jonnie explained.

‘In summer, the heat can cause these transitions to occur more quickly.

‘Heavier base notes may become more pronounced sooner and, if too intense, can overshadow the more delicate top and middle notes, upsetting the desired balance of the fragrance.’

Some of the brand’s standout summer fragrances include Brume Du Matin, crafted with fresh floral notes, Oud Jaune, which contains a blend of ylang-ylang, pineapple and Santal Complet, which has sandalwood complemented with coconut and lemon.

And if you feel like your summer scent is simply fading in the heat, you may not be applying it correctly.

Jonnie advises applying it to pulse points, including the wrists, neck, behind the ears and inside of the elbows, because these places generate heat, which helps to spread the fragrance throughout the day.

It is also important to store fragrances in a cool, dark place to maintain their integrity, because heat and light can reduce their potency and longevity.

And while you want to soak in the fragrance to ensure it lingers, Jonnie said you want to make sure you avoid spraying too much.

Jonnie said: ‘Instead of applying more than usual, focus on proper application techniques.

‘Overspraying can create an overwhelming odor, especially in hot weather.’
