Australian basketball star Jack McVeigh received a mixed reaction from his followers after sharing a seemingly cruel interaction with his wife.

McVeigh and the rest of the Boomers have reached the quarterfinals of men’s basketball in Paris as they aim to win a historic medal at the Games in France.

McVeigh is one of the team’s standout players and his excellent form has earned him a contract with the NBA’s Houston Rockets.

Things are going swimmingly for the 28-year-old, who married his wife Bethany this year.

But she went viral after sharing an anecdote in hopes of motivating her followers, but her plan failed.

“I got mad at my wife after my first Olympics. ‘You’re so talented,’ she told me,” his tweet read.

“Compatible and kind, right? Well, according to McVeigh, he missed the point.

“It’s not talent, it’s dedication,” I replied. “One day you might be able to wear the Australian uniform, but are you prepared to dedicate your whole life to trying?”

The tweet has racked up over 250,000 views and has sparked a number of negative reactions, with fans all saying the same thing.

“I’d say the same thing, Jack,” wrote one fan. “You don’t sound very good.”

Another said: “One day, if I work hard enough, I too might be cruel to those who love me.”

A third fan said: “Weird flex.”

“I think it’s probably a combination of talent, dedication and the fact that he’s 680 feet tall,” another fan observed.

Australia will face Serbia next in what has been a rollercoaster tournament so far.

They impressed in the opening loss to Spain and played well in the defeat to a talented Canada team, before a first half described by coach Brian Goorjian as “diabolical” in the loss to Greece that nearly knocked them out.

It is, however, a favourable match-up given their recent form: Tokyo bronze medallists Australia beat Serbia by 11 points in an Olympic warm-up clash in Abu Dhabi on their way to France last month.
