Australians have called for Canadian Ethan Katzberg to undergo a DNA test after being shocked by his surprising, yet very familiar, appearance at the Olympics.
Katzberg, 22, won gold in the men’s hammer throw in Paris on Sunday to further consolidate his position. his dominance of the discipline after becoming the youngest world champion in history last year.
The Canadian, with a distinctive figure with his moustache and long curly hair, won with a first throw of 84.12 metres, with none of his rivals able to respond.
But all Australians are asking the same question after Katzberg’s triumph, with many convinced he has Australian DNA.
“No, I want a DNA test, this man is clearly Australian,” one person said on X.
Another said: “Canadians are Australians from the northern hemisphere. Application denied.”
A third fan joked: “They’re just appropriating the Australian male look.”
Others compared Katzberg’s look to Neighbours legend Toadfish Rebecchi, while one fan joked: ‘DNA will prove he was a German porn actor from 1978.’

The Canadian triumphed in Paris on Sunday by winning gold in the men’s hammer throw.
Reflecting on his victory, the 22-year-old said: ‘I don’t think I expected it, but I had the preparation in mind to make a good round on the first throw, and throwing 84 meters felt really good.’
Hungary’s Bence Halasz won silver with 79.97 and Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Kokhan won bronze with 79.39.
The three hammer throwers took turns asking each other playful questions at the news conference after their victory, as reporters at the Stade de France swarmed the men’s 100m medallists.
A podium comprising Katzberg, Halasz, who was celebrating his 27th birthday on Sunday, and the 23-year-old Kokhan represented a changing of the guard, as defending Olympic champion Wojciech Nowicki, 35, finished seventh and his teammate, Tokyo bronze medallist Pawel Fajdek, was fifth, taking a bow after his final throw.
But Australians believe it must have links to Australia, given its distinctive appearance.

Norway’s Eivind Henriksen, who won silver in Tokyo, was fourth.
Kokhan, who claimed her bronze medal after Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Iryna Gerashchenko won gold and bronze in the high jump, said it was a great night for her country.
“These medals are very important for Ukraine, because our people can finally enjoy a happy moment, cheer us up and celebrate with us, without thinking about the war for a single day,” he said.
World hammer throw champion Ethan Katzberg has become an Olympic champion, becoming the first Canadian to win gold in the event since 1956.
