The driver accused of killing a husband and wife in a horror collision involving three vehicles showed no remorse for the couple’s deaths, a court heard.

Trevor Schutz, 62, and his wife Catherine, 54, were traveling in their black Ford sedan near Penola, in South Australia’s south-east, on Easter Sunday when the accident occurred.

The driver of a Ford pickup truck, Shane Leistra, 51, allegedly crashed into them head-on at the intersection of Riddoch Highway and Three Mile Lane shortly after 5:15 p.m.

Emergency services rushed to help Mr and Mrs Schutz, but the couple died at the scene.

Two women, ages 42 and 69, who were traveling in a white Tesla, were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash.

Leistra appeared at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court from hospital on Tuesday and was granted three months bail to live with her sister.

He was charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving.

Prosecutors told the court that Leistra showed no remorse when police spoke to him at the scene of the crash.

“The defendant, at that time… had shown a lack of remorse,” the prosecutor said, according to The advertiser.

“I can’t comment on why that is… there could be a number of reasons.”

Leistra was returning from a trip to Portland, Victoria, when he allegedly swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed into the two cars, the court heard.

He suffered rib fractures in the accident and was taken to hospital for treatment and mandatory tests. The results of your blood alcohol test will be available in three weeks.

The prosecutor asked the court to impose a bail condition that would ban Leistra from driving for 12 months.

It is understood that Mr and Mrs Schutz were the loving parents of two daughters and long-standing members of the local Lutheran church in Suttontown.

Locals shared touching tributes on social media to the couple who had lived in their home in the town for more than 20 years.

“They were the best people in the world and always helped others,” one person commented.

‘I am absolutely shocked to hear this news. Down to earth, decent and friendly people. I have been to his farm several times collecting his beloved t-shirts, always happy to chat. Thoughts and prayers for family and friends,” another person wrote.
