Rod is the youngest of five children born to Bob and Elsie Stewart, and during his six decades in the spotlight he has repeatedly praised his brothers, Don and Bob, and his sisters, Mary and Peggy, for taking care of him when he was young.
The world-famous singer was born in London in 1945 after his family moved south, while his four older siblings were born in Scotland. There were eight years between him and his closest brother.
After Peggy died at the young age of 40 in 1975, and Don and Bob, both aged 90, died last year, Mary is Sir Rod’s only surviving sister.
As an aspiring footballer in his childhood, Sir Rod drew attention to how his brothers supported him in every way, including washing his “dirty pants” after training.
But as he grew older, the father of eight decided he wanted to pursue a career in music, something he also credits to his siblings.
Speaking at Mary’s 90th birthday party in 2019, for which his older brothers jokingly hired Rod Stewart impersonators to perform, the star paid tribute to how his older sisters and brothers had been “instrumental” in helping him get into to the music.
The Sun reported that he told the crowd: “Whether it’s playing football or washing my dirty underpants, I can’t say enough about these guys.”

‘We’ve had our discussions, haven’t we, Don? The occasional fight from time to time, but I love you, and I love you, Mary.
Sir Rod, Mary, Don and Bob became especially close after the death of their sister Peggy, who died of multiple sclerosis in 1975 at the age of 40.
The music legend welcomed his eldest daughter, Sarah Streeter, in 1963, when she was 17, with his then-partner Susannah Boffey.
He then welcomed daughter Kimberly, 44, and son Sean, 43, with ex-wife Alana Stewart, from whom he separated in 1984.
Rod also shares Ruby, 36, with former model Kelly Emberg, and has daughter Renee, 31, and son Liam, 29, with New Zealand model Rachel Hunter.
It came after Penny took to Instagram to share a gushing tribute to her eldest son on his 18th birthday.
She shared a series of snaps of her and Rod with Alastair over the years and gushed about her “wonderful” son in a caption.
She wrote: ‘My beautiful firstborn that I had dreamed of for 34 years of my life, came to me as a gift that I have always treasured. Happy 18th birthday. I am so proud of the wonderful man you have become xxxx.’
