Cillian Murphy appeared completely frozen when he was on the set of the sixth and final series of Peaky Blinders on Wednesday.

Despite wrapping himself in a thick black hooded cloak, the lead actor, 44, seemed to shiver as he prepared to film new scenes for the BBC series in the Lancashire moors.

Cillian, who plays gang leader Tommy Shelby, wore his character’s signature flat cap under his hood and black gloves as he joined his fellow cast and crew on location.

At one point, the star put his hands in his pockets to keep the cold away in the run-up to another filming day for the series.

Cillian, who also serves as the executive director, was on hand to help the director prepare for the upcoming scenes.

In addition to Cillian, several people on horseback were seen on the set.

It comes after the show’s creator, Steven Knight, hinted last week that the program could continue without Cillian’s central character Tommy Shelby.

Knight, 62, shared Birmingham Live: “There may be worlds that are part of the Peaky world that are about someone else.”

The award-winning screenwriter added that a Peaky Blinders world without Tommy requires the franchise to take on a whole new form as he is currently “ the centerpiece [which] everything revolves around. ‘

Steven continued, ‘As it is, it’s absolutely impossible to work without Cillian. As it grows and progresses, who knows?

He added: “It will continue in a different form, namely the movie, and after that we want to keep the world going.”

The sixth series continues where the fifth series ended on December 7, 1929, the morning after a rally led by Oswald Mosley.

Peaky Blinders revolves around the gang of the same name run by the ruthless Tommy and his family, watching them build their power and influence in Birmingham and beyond.

The fifth season ended on a cliffhanger, with Tommy seeing visions of his late wife Grace (Annabelle Wallis) and kidding himself after his botched assassination attempt on the leader of the British Union of Fascists.

Production on the show was delayed last year due to the Covid-19 crisis, but shooting could begin last month with cast and crew adhering to strict coronavirus restrictions.

The BBC drama has been running for eight years and is hugely popular, but the sixth season has been confirmed as the last, with creator Steven Knight confirming that the story will return ‘in a different form’.

Final adjustments were made to the Manchester-based sets in February after the cast filmed in Scotland.

However, the locations show Birmingham – the actual setting of the popular gangster drama.

Meanwhile, TV star Sam Clafin, 34, was recently seen on set for the first time since producers confirmed he will return as a politician.

Last month, Peaky Blinders revealed Oswald’s fate in a tweet: ‘Sam Claflin will return as Oswald Mosley in # PeakyBlinders series 6.’

The star of the Hunger Games played the fascist leader, who rose to fame as a Member of Parliament in the 1920s and later in the 1930s after becoming disillusioned with mainstream politics.
