Stephen Holt, possible first pick in the PBA draft.
If it ends up picking what many consider to be the best talents in the PBA Rookie Draft instead of looking for what’s missing, Terrafirma is fortunate to benefit from having two talented backcourt players on its roster.
The Dyip could face Fil-Am guard Stephen Holt during the 4:30 p.m. debates at the Market! Walk! in Taguig City, which would force the still-sluggish team to provide additional support to ace guard Juami Tiongson.
Holt has impressive credentials despite being one of the oldest rookies in the field at 31, having played in Australia and Europe, and some see him as having an impact similar to that of TNT’s Mikey Williams.
But questions remain about whether Terrafirma will go for Holt or go for a big man that coach Johnedel Cardel’s team doesn’t have.
It was the same sentiment Cardel shared earlier this week, but it seems tough to move on from Holt if the Dyip franchise is willing to have him at least in the short term.
Second pick Blackwater should be responsive to any decision by Terrafirma, and coach Jeffrey Cariaso could choose La Salle guard Schonny Winston.
Rain or Shine has the third and fourth picks, a big luxury for coach Yeng Guiao to bolster his youth-laden squad looking for better things in Season 48.
NorthPort picks fifth, followed by Phoenix, NLEX and Meralco before Converge also makes back-to-back picks.
The first round is completed by NorthPort and Terrafirma, who will likely use this pick to meet their needs. Terrafirma earned the right to pick first after another dismal season that produced just three wins out of 33 games, missing the playoffs in all three conferences.
This is despite a brilliant campaign from Tiongson, who averaged 18.1 points and should have had a deserved All-Star selection.
But with the possibility of having Holt, Tiongson’s load could be lightened a bit.
