Paul Scholes slammed one of Manchester United’s summer signings after their dismal 3-0 defeat to Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Spurs completely dominated the match on Sunday and should have been more than 1-0 up when United captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a foul on James Maddison in the 42nd minute.

Brennan Johnson had put Spurs ahead in the third minute after an impressive assist from Micky van de Ven. Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke then added goals against United’s 10 men in the second half, but Spurs also missed multiple important opportunities to score more.

Sunday’s result left United with just seven points from their first six games in the Premier League this season, and comes after a big summer of recruitment.

Scholes believes Matthijs de Ligt, who joined from Bayern Munich for £43m, has not made any difference to United’s defence.

“When you bring in players, you expect them to be much better than the ones you already have. I don’t see players coming in who make a big difference,” said the former midfielder in SuperSport.

“De Ligt has replaced Maguire, let’s say, but there is no big difference in that.

Asked if the Dutchman is an improvement on former club captain Maguire, Scholes replied: “No, absolutely not.”

Early in his speech, Scholes did not hold back in his assessment of United under Erik ten Hag, saying: “You don’t know how they are going to play.”

“You don’t know how they will approach the games, if they will play on the counterattack or sit deep or if they will try to have all the possession of the game.” We have no idea. They look like a soccer team without a coach.

“We’ve been there for two and a bit years… from the first week Ange Postecoglou came in, we probably knew what Tottenham were doing and they are doing it to this day.

The former midfielder did not limit himself to evaluating the management of Erik ten Hag either.

‘We are two and a bit years away (at United) and, as I said, it is a team without a coach.

‘The players today seemed dead, they seemed flat, they seemed: “I don’t know what to do”, there is no enthusiasm for football and that can only emerge on the training pitch.

“Some of the positions people take on the field are crazy sometimes.”
