It has been rumored for months that Mescal had split with musician Phoebe Bridgers, 28, whom he has yet to address directly.
Asked if he would ever touch on the subject in The Hollywood Reporter article, he gave an interesting answer.
Mescal said: ‘Maybe at some point. But not now. It’s just tough territory. Yeah.’

He said: ‘I’m definitely tempted to say the status of my whatever, that’s always going to be there. But I don’t think it’s a wise thing to do.
‘When Normal People came out, I was very direct in the interviews, and it didn’t really help me. But there is still the temptation to say: “Shut the fuck up. This is my life. This is what is happening. Or this is what is happening”.
‘But move as far as I can, that will be my private life. That is a difficult thing to achieve. But giving an answer to strangers about my life doesn’t really help me.
