Former England international Paul Merson has praised Trent Alexander-Arnold for his performance against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night.

Merson was particularly impressed with Alexander-Arnold’s second assist, claiming he executed a ‘David Beckham’ style of pass.

After the match on Sky Sports, he said: ‘He is phenomenal. People say ‘he can’t defend’. Why do you have to defend when you go forward like him?

“To put the numbers and the assists he’s getting is just amazing, absolutely amazing.

“Some of the balls he plays, the weight of the pass – whatever he chooses, he composes himself, never panics.

“That ball was David Beckham. If you’d looked at his feet there and nothing else, you’d have thought it was David Beckham.’
