It’s not unusual for stand-up comedy shows to feature high-profile comedians making unexpected appearances to practice material or perform a group performance.
But the audience at the Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles got a big surprise on Tuesday night when Sir Paul McCartney briefly appeared on stage.
The 82-year-old Beatle made an appearance during his friend Deon Cole’s performance, after the Black-ish star, 52, said the two had smoked backstage.
“I got high with my friend tonight and we had a great time. Come here,” Cole said while keeping his guest’s identity a secret in a clip of the interaction he shared on X (formerly Twitter).
“Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for my friend Paul McCartney,” he continued.
The audience at the Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles received the ultimate surprise guest on Tuesday night when Sir Paul McCartney briefly appeared onstage with comedian Deon Cole.
The 82-year-old Beatle made an appearance during his friend Deon Cole’s comedy set, after the Black-ish star, 52, said the two had smoked backstage.
During the comedian’s performance, McCartney could be seen gliding through the crowd, but as soon as the audience got a good look at him on stage, they erupted in cheers.
The comedian hugged the singer-songwriter, who started laughing as Cole leaned his head against him.
McCartney, wearing a navy windbreaker with chest pockets, a blue striped shirt, dark jeans and charcoal sneakers, pointed to his watch as his friend said off-mic: “I was flying like crazy!”
“You were giving it your all,” McCartney repeated, and Cole replied, “Yeah, for that good shit you got.”
McCartney drew another laugh from the audience when he replied: “Oh, it wasn’t my fault. Don’t blame me!”
Cole then took a moment to mock audience members for their supposedly lackluster reception.
“I had to smoke, and that’s why this is happening,” she said, “and all you motherf***ers didn’t give me any love tonight.”
After an audience member shouted that they appreciated him, Cole yelled, “Shut the f*** up!”
The supposedly mediocre set didn’t seem to bother McCartney at all, who muttered: “I just enjoyed watching you work on this material, and you’re right, some parts were a failure.”
Cole laughed, but admitted he would rather fail “in front of 40 people than 4,000.”

Cole asked him if McCartney ever “failed” and he said the Beatles had gone through some rough nights in their early days. “In the beginning, when we first started, guys would throw us coins,” he admitted.
Cole added that he didn’t like the feeling of failure, especially as a veteran comedian, but laughed when McCartney joked: “It’ll make a man out of you”; pictured with comedian Ocean Glapion.
He then turned the tables and asked the Wings frontman if he had ever failed a gig.
