Wembley was a scene of celebration on Thursday night as it played host to England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro.

England thrashed Montenegro 7-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Harry Kane, to ensure they booked their place at next summer’s Euros in style – but they had other reasons to celebrate too.

England reached a landmark milestone on Thursday at Wembley – playing out their 1,000th game in history.

And England celebrated the special occasion by inviting a host of past greats, including the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Wayne Rooney and Tony Adams back to the national stadium.

All former captains, players with 50 or more caps, and the surviving members of the 1996 World Cup-winning squad were all invited to attend.

At half-time, Gascoigne and Co were paraded on the Wembley turf in front of the England supporters as they soaked up the special moment. 

Other players presented on the pitch at the break, included Sol Campbell, Martin Keown, David Seaman, David James, Jermain Defoe and Glen Johnson.

Kane netted a first-half hat-trick at Wembley, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Marcus Rashford and Tammy Abraham also got on the scoresheet, while England’s sixth of the evening came from an Aleksandar Sofranac own goal. 

Southgate will be hoping his side continue from where they left off when they take on Kosovo away on Sunday in their final Euro 2020 qualifier.
