The 77-year-old is best known as one half of the slapstick duo The Chuckle Brothers alongside his late brother Barry, who died in 2018 aged 73.

In a big change of scene, Paul’s next role sees him play the killer involved in London’s seedy underground drugs scene, with the film due for release next year.

I was writing it thinking of him. I saw him on TV and just when he smiled, I thought there was a glimpse of a dark side that had never been explored.

Before adding: ‘As soon as I approached him he was very interested. “It has been a pleasure to work with him and he has actually been very good in a very different role.”

Last year Paul, whose real name is Paul Elliott, He choked back tears as he claimed his iconic children’s show Chucklevision revived a young fan from a coma.

Recalling the incident, Paul said during an appearance on This Morning: “We said at the time, if we don’t do anything else in life, we will have saved a girl’s life.”

He revealed that the girl’s parents had been told that if no improvement was shown within a few days, doctors would turn off the life support machines.

‘The doctors told (the parents) that they can talk to her, but we don’t know if she can hear them.’

Paul went on to say that the fan’s distraught mother decided to record the show’s theme song and play it on a loop next to her daughter’s bed.

“Then, after two minutes, the little girl opened her eyes and said, ‘Is (Chucklevision) on mommy?'”

Paul held back tears and told Holly and Phil: “Tears came out of my eyes, now I’m filling up.”

Veteran artist Barry, whose real name was Barry Elliot, died of lung cancer in 2018.

The stage and TV star became unwell while filming a new TV series called Chuckle Time and his health then deteriorated.

At the time Paul paid a moving tribute, saying: “Not only have I lost my brother, I have also lost my theater partner of many, many years and my best friend.”

ChuckleVision was named the best CBBC series of all time by the radio times in 2019.

In a poll of 3,000 people, ChuckleVision was named the best, followed by The Story Of Tracy Beaker and Dick And Dom In Da Bungalow.

Paul said at the time: ‘Thank you because you’ve all helped put ChuckleVision where it belongs, at number one!’
