Patti Newton has said her husband Bert would be stunned by the outpouring of support after his death.

“He would have been overwhelmed by the reaction,” the 76-year-old told The Herald Sun.

‘I am overwhelmed by it, because I find myself thinking: I hope I have appreciated him enough. I hope I told him how fantastic he was,” she added.

“Bert wanted to be loved and he never thought he was. He wanted to be loved more than anything else in the world. He always said, “Do you love me?” I’d say, “Don’t be stupid, of course I love you.” Nothing was enough. It had to be more.’

The showbiz legend will be buried at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne at 10 a.m. Friday.

The attendance list is capped at 500 fully vaccinated guests, consisting of family, friends and colleagues.
