There has been a lot of excitement about Ralf Rangnick’s appointment to Manchester United, although former star Patrice Evra has admitted he is “baffled” by the reaction to the German.
Rangnick has been appointed as interim manager until the end of the current campaign before taking on an advisory role for the next two seasons.
The 63-year-old is known for his very intense playing style, but Evra believes this is already in the club’s DNA.

Patrice Evra has admitted he was ‘stunned’ by the reaction to Rangnick .’s nomination
Ahead of the United vs. Arsenal game, he said on Amazon Prime when asked to comment on Rangnick’s appointment: “Perplexed.
“I think we’re talking more about Rangnick than what the players are doing on the pitch, because we fired a manager, but everyone seems so excited and ‘Rangnick is going to be a genius.’
“He has my full support, but let’s see. I want the players on the pitch to react because when a manager is fired, the players have to take some responsibility. All United fans are excited about Rangnick.”
Co-pundit Alan Shearer said he felt the German got the part because of his experience, as he said the previous regime, including previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, was learning on the job.
Fellow pundit Alan Shearer has wondered if Rangnick will get United’s top star players
He said: ‘How does he (Rangnick) get the best of that talent (players at United).
“That talent has been disjointed in recent months and it’s a messy situation.
“There are a lot of people at this football club who learn by doing. Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer), Kieran McKenna, Michael Carrick, (Darren) Fletcher in terms of the director of football and it’s a messy situation he’s walking into.
“One of the reasons they go is a huge experience. The German coaches have nothing but positive things to say about him, but we are about to find out how good he is.
“He’s never been able to combine a pool of talent with what he’s talking about here in terms of individuals.”
Rangnick is known for his high-pressure style – something Cristiano Ronaldo was never known for during his career.

Thierry Henry thinks this is something Rangnick will have to discuss with the Portuguese superstar upon his arrival at the club.
The Arsenal legend said: “Now it’s going to be a discussion between Rangnick and him. Because that’s not the part of the game that he likes the most and Rangnick is the part of the game that he likes the most and is the most oppressive.
“So they’re going to need a discussion and who’s going to have to give up a little bit of what they like to do.
“And egos will have to be put aside at some point for the good of this club, that’s the most important thing. It shouldn’t be something with Ronaldo or Rangnick, they have to find a way to move this club forward.”
Former Manchester United star Teddy Sheringham described Rangnick’s appointment as “absurd” and claimed players would become “small-minded” under the interim boss.
Asked about Sheringham’s comments, Evra said: (His comments are) Maybe too strong, but like I said, we keep talking about Rangnick and his philosophy in the game and pressure, but this is normally all United’s DNA.
“We are a team that plays the whole game with that work ethic, so we just need a man who says let’s play the United way and as Thierry says, the manager will play an important role in the situation with Cristiano.
“Because I remember with Sir Alex (Ferguson) that Robin Van Persie came from Arsenal and he was always injured.
“So he tells us that Robin will not train with us like he does every day, but that he will win the competition for us.
“So I don’t understand why Ronaldo’s debate is not urgent. He has never done that in his career. I want Cristiano to score goals.”
Manchester United started with an attacking line-up consisting of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.
Shearer said he wouldn’t be surprised if Rangnick had some input into the team, but claimed United and Arsenal are both a million miles away from Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool.
Shearer said: ‘It’s a very attacking lineup. We’ve seen pictures of Rangnick in the stadium so I’d be surprised if he hasn’t spoken to Michael and had some input into the team.
“It’s offensive, we saw them sitting back at the weekend and buying off possession, I don’t expect that tonight with those leaders. They have to go for it and win tonight.”
He added: “These two clubs are a million miles from the top three, so both clubs can compete for that fourth place. Important for both teams to make that statement tonight.
