Patreon launches unlimited ad-free video hosting

Patreon has officially rolled out its native video hosting platform – a year after it was first unveiled.

Patreon Video is designed to give content creators more control over their output and increase fan engagement.

And according to the popular membership platform, “Patreon Video is the first video product designed specifically for the needs of creators, targeting directly at the creator-fan relationship.”

What is Patreon Video and what’s in it for content creators?

Patreon Video is a video uploader and player native to the platform. Before its release, creators on the site had to use third-party video tools such as YouTube and Vimeo. That brings its own problems – not least the inefficiency of using multiple platforms.

What makes Patreon’s video lineup different is that it’s completely ad-free. The company claims this allows it to monetize and share content that the community actually wants, rather than what opaque algorithms dictate.

The service allows users to upload videos of unlimited length, create custom thumbnails, save playback states, and even the picture-in-picture mode when viewed on mobile devices. Videos can also be cast via iOS Airplay, with Chromecast support planned for a future update.

And that’s not all members can expect. “Over the next year, we will continue this investment through improved creation tools, enhanced podcasting features and new community experiences,” said Patreon.

Members looking to grow their community can now access data-driven audience insights. Custom video previews are now also offered – an opportunity to attract new fans by giving them a taste of what to expect when they join.

Bearing in mind the reach of different content creators – and what content is – Patreon Video promises accessibility for everyone. When the video tool was first announced, Patreon CEO Jack Conte said: The edge

(opens in new tab)“we build the horizontal architecture for any creator, regardless of their medium or regardless of the upload format, to build a business around their work.”

Patreon Video is currently available for free to eligible creators with the Pro and Premium plans until 2023.
