Pat McAfee has boldly claimed that it won’t be long until marijuana is legalized across the United States, as he appeared to throw shade at the Dallas Cowboys for letting Travis Kelce pass for his failed drug test.

The Kansas City Chiefs star was suspended by the NCAA for one year during his time at the University of Cincinnati after failing a drug test.

On a previous episode of his New Heights podcast with his brother Jason, which resurfaced in the middle of this year’s NFL Combine, Kelce revealed that his marijuana mistake left a black mark on his record when the interview with the Dallas Cowboys came around.

And McAfee was outraged that the incident could have denied the NFL a big opportunity, as he insisted it wouldn’t be long until the league eliminated marijuana testing.

“The NFL has always used marijuana as leverage in negotiations with players,” McAfee said on his eponymous show Wednesday.

Players will say, “We want less off-season training because we feel like we’re getting beat up.” And the NFL says, “You want marijuana? We’ll have 20 games.” And the players’ association says, “We’re not going to give up all that just because of marijuana.”

“But it looks like we’re approaching a point where marijuana will probably be approved at the federal level.” You’d think someone with a brain would do that. It’s just a matter of time.

That’s what I took away from the Travis Kelce story. First of all, great answer. “I worked my ass off to do it. He was young, I’m sorry. I made a mistake.”

“But also, nowadays they say, ‘Did you hear you failed a marijuana test?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘Okay, thanks for being honest, let’s move on.’

‘Thank God, Andy Reid didn’t care when he drafted Travis Kelce. And thank goodness Andy Reid brought Patrick Mahomes there because watching them play football together has led to people robbing banks.

‘Hopefully, in the future, the NFL will be a better place by eliminating marijuana testing. The fact that it potentially slowed down a GOAT because of a mistake that was made when she was 19 that all other humans are making.

While in college in Cincinnati in 2010, Kelce was suspended for one year for testing positive for marijuana.

He previously revealed that the suspension proved to be a sticking point for the Dallas Cowboys in his Combine interview.

“At the Combine I had some bad interviews,” Travis recalled in the old New Heights episode, which resurfaced this week.

‘The Cowboys were putting pressure on me for having this red flag about missing a year.

‘I don’t know if I was having a bad morning, I was basically, I don’t even know if I want to say this.

‘It ended very quickly. I basically said, ‘If you guys think I’m going to be that kind of person or you’re wondering if I’m still that kind of person after everything I’ve fought to get to where I am now, from missing one season, then you guys are probably going to go somewhere else.’ side and choose someone else.

The NFL raised its threshold for a positive marijuana test from 35 nanograms to 150 in 2021, while eliminating testing during the offseason. Several US states have legalized or decriminalized marijuana in recent years.

Kelce recently estimated that between 50 and 80 percent of active NFL players smoke marijuana, although he admitted that most kicked the habit more than a month before the seasons began.
