If Brandon Aubrey retires without an NFL record, ESPN’s Pat McAfee thinks the Dallas kicker can safely blame his Cowboys teammates.

“It’s a real travesty that Brandon Aubrey missed that 66-yard field goal,” McAfee wrote on X after a penalty negated what would have been the longest field goal in NFL history. “I’m so sad for him. This guy is phenomenal.”

The moment occurred late in the first half in Cleveland on Monday, where the visiting Cowboys would beat the Browns, 33-17.

Aubrey was attempting a 66-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter, and although he managed to split the upright, Dallas was called for delay of game.

“Aubrey gets right into it,” said Fox Sports’ Kevin Burkhardt alongside his co-host, Tom Brady. “In this case, there are whistles. But look at this. It would have been good!”

Aubrey was attempting a 66-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter, and although he managed to split the upright, Dallas was called for delay of game.

The penalty pushed Dallas out of field goal range, though fans online wanted to see Aubrey attempt a 71-yard field goal.

“They should have let Aubrey try the 71 yarder!” wrote one fan on X. “I’m upset.”

Another added: “I have no idea why they didn’t try the 71-yarder.”

Instead of a field goal, the Cowboys attempted one more offensive play, but quarterback Dak Prescott’s deep pass down the middle of the field was incomplete. The two teams went into halftime with Dallas leading 20-3.

Aubrey made all four of his attempts Sunday in Cleveland, including a 57-yard bomb.

If his 66-yard attempt had counted, it would have tied Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker’s NFL record, which he set on Sept. 26, 2021, against the Detroit Lions.

Aubrey, a former soccer player who was drafted by MLS side Toronto FC, decided to focus on soccer in the 2020s and has since signed with the USFL before joining the Cowboys in 2023.

His longest career field goal is a 60-yarder with Dallas last season.
