David, 70, played Frank Gallagher’s much-loved character in Shameless, where he was often seen puffing on a cigarette and chugging a can of beer.

Throughout his time on the show, which lasted nearly a decade, Frank became known for his sailor mouth, drunken antics, and developing a penchant for getting into difficult situations.

A good ten years after the show ended, he looks completely different to the beer-drinking Mancunian he played in Shameless.

In the first images released of his character Jim Bracknell, he can be seen sporting long white hair and a scraggly beard, in a series of creepy snaps from the upcoming show.

Passenger takes place in the fictional northern town of Chadder Vale. Other cast members include Wunmi Mosaku (Loki) and Rowan Robinson (So Awkward).

He is also working with fellow Shameless actors Sean Gilder, who played Paddy Maguire, Jo Hartley (After Life) and Coronation Street’s Debbie Rush, who portrayed Anna Windass in the long-running ITV soap.

Away from Shameless, actor David has also appeared in other TV roles including Funny Woman, Ricky Gervais’ dark comedy Afterlife, Troy and Charles Dickens’ adaptation Dodger.

He has also appeared on the big screen with roles in films such as Nowhere Boy, Hot Fuzz and Black Sea opposite Jude Law.

But his new role in Passenger is completely different, as his character, a fracking manager, is blamed for a series of mysterious incidents in the town of Chadder Vale.

Written by Broadchurch star Andrew Buchan, Passenger follows ‘a close-knit community unwilling to face their fears of change, of outsiders and of the unknown.’

The synopsis for the show reads: ‘As a series of strange occurrences and increasingly shocking crimes begin to unfold in the town, residents resort to short-term theories and blame outside influences such as the fracking site and its manager Jim Bracknell (Threlfall).

As things get weirder, the people push back against Riya’s absurd notion that there is something wrong with this town. But what are they so afraid of?’

Passenger airs on ITVX and Britbox on Sunday 24 March
